Build Your Own Node
With some hardware and patience, you can run your own Bitcoin node and contribute to decentralization. Quick guide:
Hardware
- At least 1 TB SSD (SATA or NVMe), 8 GB RAM
- Stable internet connection (upload 20+ Mbit/s), 24/7 power supply
- Compact computer (e.g., Mini PC) or retired desktop
- Example products (external links):
Operating System
- Install a current version of Debian/Ubuntu.
- Update packages: sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
- Create a dedicated user: sudo adduser bitcoin
Bitcoin Core
- Download the latest release from bitcoincore.org and verify the signatures.
- Install bitcoin-qt/bitcoind and place the data directory on the SSD.
- Add the following to bitcoin.conf:
server=1 daemon=1 txindex=1 rpcallowip=127.0.0.1 maxconnections=64
Sync & Network
- Start bitcoind and open port 8333/TCP in your firewall.
- Allow incoming connections on your router (port forwarding).
- Plan for several days for initial synchronization; SSD + broadband shorten the time.
Security
- Keep the OS and Bitcoin Core updated; automate security updates
- Use a UPS to protect against unplanned power outages
- Limit SSH access (Fail2ban, SSH key login, no password login)
Monitoring
- Monitor logs with journald or a centralized log collector
- Track uptime and latency (e.g., with Prometheus/Grafana) and set alerts
- Check block height and mempool regularly to detect sync issues early
